LESSON 13: TRUE WORSHIP

In John 4:16–26, Jesus teaches the Samaritan woman that true worship is not about a location, religious tradition, or outward appearance, but about a heart genuinely surrendered to God. Jesus exposes the truth about her life, showing that authentic worship begins with honesty before God. He then moves the conversation beyond the debate over Mount Gerizim and Jerusalem and declares that the Father seeks those who will worship Him “in spirit and truth.”

To worship in spirit means that worship comes sincerely from the heart through the work of the Holy Spirit. To worship in truth means that our worship is grounded in who God has revealed Himself to be, ultimately through Jesus Christ. A true worshiper does not simply worship on Sunday; their whole life becomes an expression of love, obedience, surrender, and devotion to God.

Big Idea: True worship flows from a heart transformed by Christ, empowered by the Spirit, grounded in God's truth, and surrendered to God in everyday life.
