He Must Increase (John 3:22-36)

Jun 17, 2026    Rev. Chonfong Paul Yang

In John 3:22–36, John the Baptist's disciples become concerned because more people are following Jesus than John. Rather than becoming jealous or defensive, John responds with remarkable humility. He reminds them that every ministry and opportunity comes from God and that his role was never to be the Messiah but to prepare the way for Him. Using the illustration of a bridegroom and his friend, John explains that his joy is complete because Jesus is receiving the attention He deserves. John then declares one of the most powerful statements in Scripture: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (v. 30). The passage concludes by emphasizing Christ's supremacy as the One sent from heaven and the only source of eternal life.

Big Idea

True joy is found when we willingly decrease so that Christ may increase in every area of our lives.
