Oct 21, 2026  •  Rev. Chonfong Paul Yang

Brief Summary

In John 15:16–27, Jesus teaches His disciples what it means to be His friends. Friendship with Jesus is more than knowing Him; it is about obeying His commands, loving one another, bearing lasting fruit, and faithfully representing Him to the world.

Jesus reminds His disciples that He chose them for a purpose—to bear fruit that lasts. He commands them to love one another as He has loved them. Although following Jesus may bring rejection and opposition, believers are called to remain faithful and courageous. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they are empowered to testify about Christ through their words and actions.

Four Marks of Jesus' Friends:

CHOSEN to Bear Fruit (v. 16) — Our relationship with Jesus should produce lasting spiritual fruit.

COMMANDED to Love (v. 17) — Genuine love for Jesus is expressed through obedience and love for others.

COURAGEOUS in Opposition (vv. 18–25) — Remain faithful to Christ even when the world rejects us.

CALLED to Testify (vv. 26–27) — Depend on the Holy Spirit to share Christ with others.

Big Idea

True friendship with Jesus is demonstrated through obedient love, lasting spiritual fruit, courageous faith, and a life that points others to Christ.

Key Takeaway

A FRIEND OF JESUS DOES NOT JUST KNOW HIS LOVE—A FRIEND OF JESUS SHOWS HIS LOVE.
